The university was established on January 1, 1970, evolving from the Kalmyk Pedagogical Institute to become the first state university in the Republic of Kalmykia.

Kalmyk State University is situated in Elista, the capital city of the Republic of Kalmykia, Russia.

Currently, there are over 9,000 students studying at the institute, out of which 15% are international.

The university is internationally recognised by prominent organisations such as WDOMS, ECFMG, FAIMER, and the NMC (formerly MCI).
